Pfyn-Finges - Néophytes envahissantes 2024

Invasive neophytes

Sierre

The term "neophyte" refers to a plant intentionally or unintentionally introduced after 1492 into an ecosystem outside its original range.

Most of these neophytes are well integrated into our Swiss flora (e.g. the chestnut tree). However, if the population of a non-native species finds itself in a new location without the predators or parasites of its native range, it can spread spectacularly, often to the detriment of native species. This is known as an "invasive neophyte". In addition to the negative effects on biodiversity, invasive alien plants also cause problems for agriculture, public health and the economy. The course will focus on practical aspects, including field identification of the main invasive alien plants and presentation of the various control measures.
