Lecture – Armand Savioz

Sierre

As part of the 300th anniversary celebrations of the Maison du Remuage, Armand Savioz is giving a lecture on transhumance in the Sierre and Val d’Anniviers region. An introduction to this neuroscientist and researcher at the HUG, originally from the Val d’Anniviers.

Armand Savioz, originally from the Val d’Anniviers, grew up in Sierre before studying at ETH Zurich and then in the UK. A retired neuroscientist and researcher at the University Hospitals and the University of Geneva, he has focused his research on memory and memory loss in dementia.

This has led him, at the same time, to help preserve the heritage of the small community of Anniviers – its history and its culture, shaped by transhumance. The strategies once practised in the valley – notably its ecological way of life and sense of community – can today inspire our own world, which has in turn become a ‘small’ one. These reflections form the basis of a book: Anniviers, the Western Yin and Yang: An Anthropology of Alpine Life in Days Gone By, published by Georg.

As part of the event on 17 October 2026 organised to mark the 300th anniversary of the Maison du Remuage, Armand Savioz will give a talk on remuage in the Sierre and Val d’Anniviers region.
