Sierre-Zinal

Here is the route of the legendary five 4000! It takes you from Sierre to Zinal, deep in the Val d'Anniviers, on a mythical route with dreamlike landscapes. Starting from the plain, you face an impressive climb via Saint-Antoine and the Ponchette alp up to Chandolin, before following its path under the eyes of the imperial crown via Tignousa and the Weisshorn Hotel. On foot, it takes you nearly 11 hours to cover the 31 km route, but in the race, it is not uncommon to go from the plain to the mountain in 6 hours.
The course record set in 2019 by Kilian Jornet is mind-blowing: 2 hours, 25 minutes and 35 seconds!

OUR ADVICE
After a well-deserved arrival in Zinal, it is best to stay a few days in the Val d'Anniviers to discover this magnificent region!

Turn-by-turn directions

The route starts in Sierre, near the highway exit, at the beginning of the drive up to the Val d'Anniviers. You immediately enter a steep climb passing in front of the Saint-Antoine chapel before a slightly flatter section up to Plan Palet. From there, the ascent continues through the Beauregard forest before reaching the Ponchette alp. The route continues below the ridge line, then along the upper edge of the forest, before reaching Chandolin, a village perched at 2000 m altitude. From there, you continue through the forest which you leave upon arriving at Tignousa. The route then takes the planets path up to the Weisshorn Hotel, perched on its promontory. From there, a long descent towards Zinal begins: first, a false flat under the Nava rocks, passing Barneuza, and finally the final descent to Zinal.
