From March 2026 to December 2028, the section between Sion-East and Sierre-East on the A9 motorway will undergo various repair works. Disruptions are to be expected.
Work to upgrade the A9 between the Sion-Est and Sierre-Est junctions will begin in March 2026 and continue until December 2028.
Traffic safety and flow :
The Federal Roads Office will upgrade the asphalt surface and all engineering structures on the section between Sion-Est and Sierre-Est. In addition, FEDRO will build two turbo roundabouts at the Sierre-Ouest junction to improve traffic flow. Furthermore, the Sierre tunnel and the St-Léonard covered trench, over which the Lienne stream flows, will also be renovated and brought up to standard.
Traffic largely unaffected :
Traffic will continue to flow on two lanes in each direction at all stages between the Sion-Est and Sierre-Est junctions. Lane closures will be necessary during stage changes in order to adapt road markings and install restraint systems and traffic signs.
Occasional night closures :
A few exceptional closures are unavoidable. These will be kept to a strict minimum and will only take place at night.
Traffic management at the Sierre tunnel :
The Sierre tunnel with its two tubes will be renovated during the project. For safety reasons, it is not possible to maintain traffic in the tube during the works. In order to limit the impact on users and the region, two-way traffic with one lane in each direction will be maintained in the tube not affected by the works. This traffic management system will allow traffic to remain on the highway at all times and will not place any additional burden on other roads. This traffic management system will be in place from 2027 to 2028.
Work period :
Work will begin in March 2026 and will continue until the end of 2028. Each year, work will take place from March to October, with a break during the winter period. During this period, traffic management will be restored and traffic will be able to flow normally.
Between the Sion-Est and Sierre-Ouest junctions, the work will be carried out in several stages between 2026 and 2028. The turbo roundabouts at the Sierre-Ouest junction are planned for 2026, as is the work at the Sierre-Est junction. The Sierre tunnel will be renovated from 2027 to 2028.
