This hike first crosses the Géronde site and the village of Chippis, then follows the steep flank of the Gorwetschgrat. It continues through the dense pine forest of Finges, a site of prime natural importance, before crossing the Illgraben stream on the magnificent Pont Bouthanais. This bridge was built in 2005 in collaboration with the Kingdom of Bhutan and is 134 meters long. The hike ends descending along the Illgraben to reach the CFF train station of Leuk/Susten.
It is an ideal hike during hot days, as most of the route is in the shade of the mountain and pines. The first part crosses the natural site of Géronde with its unique atmosphere of fareniente, then reaches the village of Chippis, marked by its long history linked to the aluminum industry. Crossing the Bois de Finges, the founding place of the natural park of the same name, is an experience in itself, so rich and preserved is the nature of this place.
OUR ADVICE
Less known than the usual crossing of Bois de Finges, this hike is equally impressive and steeped in pure nature.
| Turn-by-turn directions | From the Sierre Tourist Office, cross the railway via the underpass to reach the Bellevue Plain. Then, head to the Planzette hill by turning left at the Pins roundabout. After descending to Géronde, continue towards the Rhône passing in front of the Technopôle and reach old Chippis. Cross the Navisence and then enter the forest. After a short ascent, continue flat eastward until the intersection with the Val d'Anniviers road (alternative start). Always continue straight along the hillside, through the forest and the scree slopes. Once out of the forest, cross the Rhône diversion canal, then proceed through the dense forest towards the Pont Bouthanais. After crossing the bridge, the path descends along the Illgraben. Upon reaching the cantonal road, turn right to cross the village of Susten and reach the CFF train station. |
